Division facts (whole number)
1. Division is equal distribution of a given quantity.
2. The number to be divided is the dividend.
3. The number which divides is called divisor.
4. The answer is called the quotient.
5. The number left after division is called the remainder.
Example: 100 / 23 =
Dividend = 100
Divisor = 23
Quotient is 4
Remainder is 8
6. If a number is divided by 0 then the Quotient is infinity. (13/0 = infinity)
7. If 0 is divided by a number then the quotient and remainder are 0 . (0/13 = 0)
8. If a number is divided by 1 then the quotient remains as the number given. (12/1 = 12)
9. If the Quotient of a number is multiplied with the divisor and added with the remainder then the dividend will be the answer.
How to divide a number?
Example: Divide 1210 by 14
1. The dividend is 1210 and the divisor is 14. Place the dividend and divisor
as shown on the right.
2. Unlike addition, subtraction and multiplication, division is performed from left to right.
(Highest place value to lowest place value)
3. Find out the first number of the quotient:
3.1) 1 (thousands place) can't be divided by 14.
3.2) 12 (thousands place & hundreds place) can't be divided by 14
3.3) 121 (thousands place, hundreds place & tens) can be divided by 14.
3.4) When 121 is divided by 14 quotient is 8 & remainder is 9.
3.5) Place the quotient (8) in the place meant for the quotient.
3.6) Multiply 14 by 8 (quotient ) = 112 and place (align) it below 121.
3.7) Subtract 112 from 120 (121 - 112 = 9) and align ite below 112.
4. Find out the next number of the quotient:
4.1) The remainder (9) from the previous step can't be divided by 14.
4.2) So, bring the next number (0) from the dividend (next place value = 1's place)
4.3) Divide 90 by 14.The quotient = 6 and the remainder =6.
4.4) Place the quotient (6) in the quotient column next to previous quotient.
4.5) Multiply 14 with 6 (quotient ) = 84 and place (align) it below 90.
4.6) Subtract 84 from 90 (90 - 84 = 6) and align ite below 84.
5. Result: quotient = 86 and remainder = 6.
6. How to verify the result: Multiply the quotient and divisor and add the remainder. The result should be dividend.
6.1) 86 * 14 + 6 = 1210.
